What's the Future of 2D to 3D Conversion?

3D is said to be the future of film and television. But how to get enough good  content in a 3D world where production talent  is scarce and there simply isn't enough programming to fill out the 3D television schedules of major new entrants like DirecTV, ESPN and Discovery? 

Enter 2D to 3D conversion. Skillful conversion of production footage or archived movies and TV shows can fill the content gap, proponents argue. 2D and 3D purists counter that conversion often compromises the quality of the material -- and risks alienating audiences.

Meanwhile, conversion shops are sprouting in Hollywood, India and elsewhere as entrepreneurs seek to cash in on the conversion "boom" -- and paydays that can total as much as $100,000 a minute.
